What is Screening Oversight and Assurance Scotland (SOAS)?

Published on 23 September 2024

Screening Oversight and Assurance Scotland (SOAS)  provides oversight, assurance and coordination support at the national level for Scotland’s national population screening programmes.  SOAS was established in April 2024, bringing together National Screening Oversight (which was a recommendation of the 2018 Review of Screening Report) and the screening national coordination activity which was previously delivered by National Services Division (NSD) of NSS.

The focus of SOAS is on oversight, assurance and coordination at the national level. This means that operational delivery of screening, which for the most part is the responsibility of local NHS Boards,  is separate.  However SOAS can support NHS partners, ask for reviews of some aspects of delivery, and make changes at both local and national level.
