Edition 7.1 of this protocol was published in May 2019 and supersedes all previous versions.
The purpose of this protocol is to provide information, definitions, and instructions for national surveillance of surgical site infection (SSI) in Scotland. For national surveillance a standardised methodology, including the use of a common set of definitions is required.
Definitions provided in this protocol allow comparisons of surveillance at a national and international level. Surveillance is a multidisciplinary activity and local ownership is crucial.
This protocol is intended for use by infection control teams, nurses, surgeons, and all other personnel who are involved in surgical site surveillance in Scotland. This resource pack contains a protocol and appendices.
