Susan Buchanan
Susan took up her role as Director of National Specialist Services and Screening Directorate in 2020. Her career started as a nurse and after qualifying, she worked in the Clinical Oncology Service and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Susan has worked in a variety of specialisms including cancer network, apheresis services and stem cell collections, and working on a CRAG study to review safe transfusion.
Susan led the setting up of the Scottish National Cord Stem Cell Bank. After moving into general management within the NHS, Susan then moved into her previous post as Associate Director of Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service (SNBTS) Patient Services. Susan was accountable for SNBTS laboratory services including regional blood banks, histocompatibility and immunogenetics, immunology, clinical apheresis services and the National Transfusion Practitioner Service.
