Research fund to improve healthcare in Scotland to continue into fourth year
The collaboration between NHSScotland Assure and Edinburgh Napier University has already awarded more than £1million

The research and innovation fund dedicated to enhancing the safety of healthcare environments within NHSScotland is set to enter its fourth year.
The fund administered by Edinburgh Napier University on behalf of NHSScotland Assure (part of NHS National Services Scotland) aims to develop a coordinated research portfolio that supports evidence-based guidance for creating safe healthcare environments free from avoidable risks. Julie Critchley, Director of NHSScotland Assure, said: “Since its inception, the fund has fostered robust collaborations between NHSScotland boards and academia.
“These strengthened relationships ensure that research aligns with priority areas in the healthcare-built environment, directing funds to the most critical areas, including water, drainage, and ventilation systems, hospital design, infection prevention and control, sustainability and unintended consequences on other built environment risks.
“Evidence-based research in these areas is crucial for delivering a sustainable healthcare service and improving patient experiences in Scotland.”
The ongoing availability of this dedicated fund provides a sustainable way for the NHSScotland Assure Research Service and Edinburgh Napier University to promote meaningful collaboration between NHSScotland, researchers, and academics, and ultimately support better healthcare outcomes and safer healthcare environments.
To date more than £1,000,000 has been awarded, with ongoing efforts to support the long-term success of co-production initiatives.
